Ocean Policy The Blue Vision Summit

The Blue Vision Summit by David McGuire and the Blue Frontier Campaign.
In the spring of 2009 over 400 ocean leaders came to Washington D.C. We came to demonstrate the vital role a healthy ocean can and must play if we’re to meet the challenges of overfishing, habitat loss and climate change.
We called our gathering the Blue Vision Summit. Narrated by Dr. Sylvia Earle, with Dr. Roger Payne.

Exploring the Pacific: A Scientific Sailing Expedition
From September 2007 to November 2008, the Sea Steward's crew embarked on an ocean sailing voyage, exploring and filming the Central California Coastline, documenting the rich and unique coastal marine life and discussing the new marine protected areas with surfers, fishermen and ocean lovers. Footage collected went into the making of A Sheltered Sea a film on the California Marine Life Protection Act and marine protected areas. (go to Partnerships & Information for film)

Part II Ocean Expeditions: Revisiting the Natural History of Near and Remote Oceania
With the California Academy of Sciences, the Sea Stewards team is participating in a far reaching and long term sailing expedition revisiting many of the remote regions that early scientists visited over a century ago. Sailing in the footseps of early natural history explorers, expedition Leaders Dr. Jack Dumbacher and Captain David McGuire will be aboard helping explore, explain and protect the natural world. The first Western Pacific Expedition occurred in October 2008 with Academy Scientists Graham Short and Dr. Healy Hamilton sailing through remote islands on the Sailing Vessel Mustang. This phase of the expedition focused on the Sygnathid fish phylogeny project, a family of fish that includes pipefish and seahorses. During the dives, species of fish that had not been recorded in the region were described and potentially new species were collected.      (Pipefish Video)

Diving for pipfish and seahorses. In this trailer, a species of Pygmy Pipehorse- a kind of missing link in the family tree of sea horses was discovered. In 2009 the team will continue to North Australia and Papua New Guinea. Watch as this exciting new project develops. The South Seas Expedition In the summer of 2009 we visited Western Australia, traveling from Perth to Ningaloo Reef in search of pipefish and sea horses.

Check out the Expedition Blog from the expedition. Seahorse Sleuth Expedition Blog In the winter of 2009 we will Join Dr. Jack Dumbacher on an expedition to Papua New Guinea, exploring the remote islands in the Milne Bay region.
